The American People Want Leadership
Leadership is not Compromise
Timothy Stagich, Ph.D.
The American People did not vote against the Democratic Party or even the policies of President Obama in our last election this past November. They voted against a lack of sufficient action to achieve jobs and fulfill the transformative promises of a new president. They voted for a change of direction in 2008 and, mostly, they received more stalemate in Congress and a Bail-out of Wall Street while Americans continued to lose their jobs, homes and health care at record levels.
The new Health Care Bill has many elements which will
help Americans such as the law to prevent Insurance Companies from canceling
policies based on “preexisting conditions.” However, by taking five hundred
million dollars out of Medicare to help pay for the New Bill, Obama alienated
many Senior Citizens. With a democratic controlled Congress, Americans
expected more than “robbing Peter to pay Paul” while spending billions to
bail-out Wall Street. Many Americans believe that our consumer banks could have
been saved without spending billions to save AIG and Goldman Sachs. And, even
though the bail-out was originally a policy started by the Republican Bush
Administration, we expected a change with a new administration and a new
president.
So, now, Mr. President, after taking a beating in the
past election, instead of real leadership, you are already offering possible
concessions and compromises to the opposition party without so much as a new
vision or even a good fight. Do you think it is good leadership to compromise
before even waging a good fight for what you believe is right for the American
people? Do you only support those fights that you believe you can win or do you
fight the fights that need to be fought for what is right for most Americans?
The American people elected you because they believed
that you would fight for them and not be giving concessions and compromises
first. For example, if you made every effort to include a Public Health Care Option
first, then, maybe, it would have been okay for most people to accept some kind
of compromise. However, many Americans believe that you could have done more to
include a Public Option using your power of the Presidency and your leadership.
This is the reason that we elected you to show how much you are willing to
fight for what you believe and what is right for most Americans, especially,
those who are most in need of a job or health care.
Mr. President, it is time to give your vision
and your leadership to help the American Worker and Consumer. Since seventy percent
of the economy is consumer-driven, this effort will help every person and
business in some way. We need your vision to set the course, and then to get as
many people on board as possible before you begin to compromise. This is
real leadership and what the American People want.
